You say this and you say that
And I hear ‘oh you’re so bad’
And the melody that you meant
Gets all twisted and bent
Into a story I was told long ago
About failings I didn’t even know
Were failings
And your simple line on a violin
Is suddenly swamped as the cellos kick in
And the kettle drums boom
As the piccolos squeal
And I begin to feel
Overwhelmed
There’s a symphony of sadness
Inside me right now
That was never intended
But somehow
The conductor in my head
Took charge and instead
Of letting a playful jig sing out
Brought a frenzied tempo of uneasy doubt
So I take moment, I take a breath
To quell the the chaotic cacophony
And release the stress
Then raise my head and look your way
And with an open heart I ask
‘sorry – what did you say?’
