What happens when a computer composes?
AMI — Artificial Musical Intelligence — is my 1997 MSc project: a program that creates melodies and accompaniment from musical rules.
A working reconstruction brings it back to the browser. Choose a style and tempo, press Compose, and hear what happens.
Make a little music
- Choose a style, from Normal Piano to Space Organ, Techno or Surreal.
- Choose a tempo, then press Compose.
- Press Play to listen. Compose again for a new piece, or download the MIDI file.
Browser sound is an approximation; MIDI preserves AMI’s original instrument choices.
From musical rules to AI experiments
AMI uses rules for melody, harmony, repetition and musical structure. The reconstruction follows the surviving MScProject source and interface, with its restoration record available to read.
FLOW explores another way of working with computers: bringing earlier songs and words into new arrangements, including experiments with AI music tools. Two different approaches, connected by the question of what happens when music meets code.
